Please note the early start time. This special edition of Concréte Mixer with doors opening at 4 pm on Sunday March 5th will be an all ages show. We’re hoping that it will be a chance to listen to some arresting abstract music in a great setting — a consciously contrary place to be on an Easter afternoon.

“Sound is the vocabulary of nature.”
– Pierre Schaeffer

The Walnut Room in Denver has been a loyal supporter of experimental and ambient artists, is a beautiful venue with superior sound, and boasts the best audio engineers in town. On April 5, six artists from different realms of performance and composition will convene at the Walnut Room to present an afternoon of acoustic, analog electronic and digital noises, sound effects and tonal music inspired by the musique concréte form and philosophy.

Mark Mosher will create expressive sample-based “instruments” on-the-fly, building up his instruments in real-time by sampling his own synthesizers as well as capturing audio from contact mics, and output from the other artists. To complement the music and sound, Mark will also project interactive visuals. He will be joined by experimental musician Randall Frazier, theremin artist Victoria Lundy, Concréte Mixer curator Thomas Lundy and modular synthesist Antidata. This assembly of Concréte Mixer is especially proud to feature artist Mark Spybey of Dead Voices on Air.

Randall Frazier: Orbit Service is the musical project of Colorado-based producer/engineer Randall Frazier (helmet room, Bela Karoli, Kal Cahoone) produced in collaboration with Kim G. Hansen (Antenne), Dennis Swanson (Day Dissolved Dream) and Kirill Nikolai (Still Light). Orbit Service’s mystical leanings steer them close to the likes of Sol Invictus, but OS zigs where neo folk zags, giving them a sonic momentum that leads to a much outer part of outer space. This beautifully crafted set smells like moist earth covered in leaves. Orbit Service’s mining of ever deeper moods has yielded a subtle treasure that glows like distant sun. http://orbitservice.bandcamp.com/http://www.helmetroom.com/

Thomas Lundy has served as curator of the Concréte Mixer series since its beginning. With Victoria Lundy, he revived the copper heart played with dry ice featured in Denver’s Carbon Dioxide Orchestra. Tom is interested in digital signal processing, and the theory of music.

Victoria Lundy has been playing theremin in the Denver experimental/ underground/punk scene since the 90s. She was a member of the avant garde Carbon Dioxide Orchestra, who opened for the legendary Silver Apples in 1997; is a founding member of Denver’s acclaimed nerd rock band The Inactivists and has appeared all of their 6 CDs and EP, and as a guest player live and in recordings with other local artists. She has performed at the 2011 Denver Noise Festival, 2014 Westword Music Showcase and at the 2013 Denver Post Underground Music Showcase as a guest of ambient project Pythian Whispers. Victoria has appeared at many venues in Denver as well as Boulder’s Dairy Center for the Performing Arts, and DU Lamont School of Music, and demonstrated the theremin at the World Science Fiction Convention as well as a 2015 Denver.nerdnite.com presentation. Recently she’s been concentrating on solo ambient work exploring the expressive qualities of the theremin. http://fandalism.com/victorialundy.

Wes Milholen is a designer and musician based in Boulder, Colorado. Most of his recordings are made under the name ANTIDATA. His performance at Concrete Mixer 5 will incorporate field recordings and photographs created during a recent research expedition to the Arctic. Wes is also the founder of Grayscale, http://grayscale.info (a manufacturer of synthesizer modules) and Theoretical Mathematics (an upcoming experimental music label).

Mark Mosher is a synthesist, recording artist, and performer from Boulder. He has performed at festivals and theaters around the country such as Electro-Music NY, Electro-Music & Mountain Oasis Festivals in Asheville NC, and the Art Institute of Sunnyvale CA. Locally he has produced shows and performed at the Dairy Center for the Arts, DU and CU. In 2014, Mark broke into the top 10 US and top 20 Global ReverbNation charts for the Electronica genre. Mark is the also the founder of the 200+ member strong Boulder Synthesizer Meetup (www.BoulderSynth.com) and has been blogging on music technology for over 9 years at www.ModulateThis.com.Mark’s most recent work is a release called “Headlights”—An Original Psychedelic Short Film with Synthesized Score (http://www.vimeo.com/markmosher/headlights).
He also launched of a new set of HD Vimeo channels featuring his short films along with live concert footage at https://vimeo.com/markmosher/channels
Mark is excited to be returning for his fifth Concréte Mixer show. At this event, Mark will use an Octatrack dynamic sampler to incorporate real-time audio output from other musicians at the event to create expressive “instruments” on-the-fly. Mark will also perform a solo piece manipulating field recordings with infrared AudioCube controllers. To accompany the music and sound for the show, Mark will also be providing interactive visuals with live camera input. Dead Voices on Air (DVOA) is Mark Spybey’s main musical project. It was formed in 1992 when he emigrated to Canada from his native England. Using improvisation and sound layering as a source for their music, DVOA blends processed sound from primitive instruments and toys into rhythmic structures or dark clusters of ambient sound. The result is music for the eyes. This is not ambient chill-out, nor is it music for wallpaper. It is organic, eclectic improvisation, cut up and spat out. Either framed into short pieces of music or rough blocks of noise. Panambience is the term coined that perhaps frames this approach most adequately. Mark S A199 worked with Zoviet*France and Download. His collaborators include cEvin Key, Eric Pounder, Jean-Yves Theriault, Jarboe, Mick Harris, James Plotkin, Mark Nugent, Orphx, Phil Western, David Wright, Zev Asher, Darryl Neudorf, Ryan Moore , Niels van Hoorn, Kinder Atom, Evolution Control Committee, Chris Connelly and others… http://deadvoicesonair.bandcamp.com/
